Staging Hacks in a Pinch

If you’re staging your home to sell, obvious tips include decluttering, cleaning off counters, and opening window blinds for more light. The goal for a staged home is to look clean, spacious, and inviting at all times. As we all know, staging a home is much more difficult when you’re living in the home you’re selling and need to make it show-ready with short to no notice.

This may seem overwhelming, but don’t worry! Here are 5 staging hacks you need to know to keep your home staged with no notice:

1. Add more decorative pillows to make beds look luxurious.

The master bedroom is especially important, as that’s the room your buyers will be living in. Hide your regular sleeping pillow and replace them with more appealing, decorative ones. You can buy more pillows, or simply purchase new pillow shams that you can put on in the morning before any showings take place. Add a couple smaller pillows and a lumbar pillow to finish the look, and it’ll make a big difference for the overall feel of your master bedroom.

2. Put out flowers and greenery.

Flowers, greenery and house plants all add visual appeal to the space. Mix fresh-cut flowers with low-maintenance potted houseplants. If you don’t have a ‘green thumb’ or simply don’t want to spend time potting plants, opt for a few quality faux plants. Faux plants come in all shapes and sizes, no matter the growing season!

3. Hide the clutter.

A common place to find junk mail, schoolwork, and pots and pans is on kitchen counters – make sure they are always completely cleared. Check around the house for charging cables and cluttered electronic cords. Do your best to keep tangled TV and entertainment center cords from view. Check the house for phone cords sitting idle in sockets. Use zip ties to organize and secure cords around computer desks. Before showings, round up all portable electronic devices and chargers in a tote bag or a part of your daily routine.

4. Use display towels.

Kitchen and bathrooms need to look immaculate. Put all your day-to-day bath and kitchen towels away during showings, and buy new, clean towels to display instead. Since you won’t be using them, keep them folded between showings so they’re always ready. Swapping out towels should be a part of your morning and evening routine when selling your house to ensure it’s show-ready at a moment’s notice.

5. Remove all traces of pets.

We all love our pets, but potential buyers may not. You’ll want to take all pet items out of the house or hide them during showings. This includes food and water bowls, toys, brushes, beds, and most importantly, your pet! Cleaning after your pet is equally important. Be sure to regularly lint roll your furniture – including couch, bar and dining room table seats, and bedroom duvet covers – vacuum often, and wash your pet regularly to avoid any lingering pet odors.
