Our military serves us proudly abroad, but when they come home it’s time for us to serve them. It may be difficult to understand just how you can contribute, and what you can do to give back this Veterans Day. With so many opportunities and organizations that provide support for troops and veterans alike, it can be overwhelming trying to sift through them. Following are five different organization you can get involved with to give back to our military servicemen and women.
The USO provide strength and support to active-duty troops by keeping them connected to family, home, and country throughout their services. Whether deployed to a war-zone or stationed overseas, service members have access to over 200 locations worldwide. As one of the largest organizations for military support and veteran services, the USO has a vast number of programs and ways to give back.
With close to 1,300 chapters and nearly 1.3 million members, the DAV’s reach is vast. This allows them to provide lifetime support for veterans of all generations and their families. The DAV is also a leader in connecting veterans with employment, hosting job fairs, and ensuring an opportunity to participate in the American Dream. The DAV doesn’t receive government funding, therefore relies on donations, volunteers, advocates, and partnerships to provide these crucial services.
So many veterans return from their service having incurred physical injuries or mental and emotional deterioration. Each one of these vets requires a unique recovery process. The Wounded Warrior Project provides free programs and services that address the individual needs of injured veterans. You can help support the WWP in a variety of ways. Host a fundraiser in your community, become a student ambassador or a community athlete, make a one-time donation or donate in memory of a loved one, or start giving a monthly gift.
Soldier’s Angels is an incredible non-profit organization that allows you to “adopt” a deployed serviceman/woman. You can send them gifts, cards, care packages, or specialized equipment. They also provide other types of aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States military, their families, and the growing veteran population.
This organization helps to build homes specially adapted for injured veterans to help them rebuild their lives. These homes allow them to restore freedom and independence and enables them to focus on family, recovery, and rebuilding. The success of this mission relies on participation, donations, volunteers, and partners. By giving back this holiday season, you can help a veteran to once again be a productive member of society.
