History

The Gold rush of Pikes Peak provided Denver City and its surrounding areas a wave of settlers, and began the long road to creating Colorado’s landscape as we know it today. A frontier town with an economy based on trade and mining (originally Called Auraria) land parcels were often traded and gambled in the many saloons by local miners, who eventually left the area when the gold rush moved towards California. The Colorado Territory was Included in the United States in 1861, and Denver became an incorporated city by November 7^th of that year. By 1876 Denver was named the state capital, and Colorado was officially admitted to the Union.

In 1902, the original county of Arapahoe was split into three distinct parts, Denver County, Adams County and South Arapahoe County, and by 1908 it had become a prominent part of the national political and socioeconomic stage, by hosting the Democratic National Convention.

Denver also has an interesting history regarding the Olympic Games, and was selected to host the 1976 winter events. However, in 1972 voters decided against the budget required for the games and turned down the offer. This makes it the only city to ever decline an Olympiad, and subsequently has made it difficult for the city to win another bid for the event.

This Queen City of the Plains has played a huge role in connecting the east and west coasts of this nation, helped advance agriculture, technology, and politics and as such has been honored by the US navy with several ships designated the USS Denver thru ought history.
